N95 8GB....

is finally in my hands!

After some thoughts and research, I have decided to trade in my aging N93 (she's still a capable phone) for this new toy.

With bigger screen, bigger RAM, and better battery, my first impression is the phone is speedy!

More personal review will come once I played more with the phone.

N95 8GB Review

AAS had published a pretty elaborated N95 8GB review which is launched recently. Compared to the original N95, many improvements had been made to the new model (yeah yeah yeah, many had said that umpteen times)

In terms of reviews, the Nokia N95 8GB is relatively simple to handle, thankfully. Not because it's a simple or trivial product, but because the original N95 is so well known and has been written about so many times that there's really little point in going over every function that's common to both devices in minute detail......

Resurrected...

Last year, HP released the Windows Mobile 5 upgrade for HX4700 users. This was good news to users like me since Pocket Office was practically useless back then and Office Mobile is definitely a welcome upgrade to us. Furthermore, its unparallelled hardware specifications were believed to harness the potential in the new OS.

We were wrong.

The upgrade is a major disaster. Because of the compaction issue in new OS, the device performed worse than a entry level PDA. The device ran like a snail, to the point that rendered it nearly unusable. All of us were frustrated. Those who couldn't stand it reverted back to the old OS. For me i called HP countless times, demanding for a solution to fix what they had broken. And they listened. They released a patch months later.

Although the patch helped to fix the problem, but the performance was still anything but justified. It's still running very much slower than its original OS. I gave up on HP for the hope to provide us with another solution to fix the remaining issues. Then i used the device less often other than occasional recording of my vehicle's fuel consumption and occasional GPS use which is a pain due to the sucky performance. The device was almost left unused.

Almost a year passed. Don't know why, i suddenly felt like revisiting the site where the forum discussed abt the PDA. When i read the threads, saw the usual topics....complaints about the performance and shit like that. Then a thread caught my attention: a PDA expert posted a topic pointing to a developer site where a Russian programmer Kozhura obtained a newer base rom of Windows Mobile 5 and modified it to enable flashing to my device, Best thing is, it fixed the performance issue! Without hesitation, i downloaded the rom, flash it to the PDA and guess what, it performed as what it should have performed in the first place! Everything is so snappy and no frustration is felt by me at all. I couldn't be happier!

Then i digged deeper into the developer forums and amazed to find that Kozhura had even released Windows Mobile 6 rom for the device! This freaking rocks! Without thinking much, i downloaded the rom and flashed it to the PDA.

The performance on the device is now very very much better than what I've used a year back. I had found new uses for this revived powerhouse. It is now my PMP which I plays music thru my iTech bluetooth headset (I also noticed that it supported AVRCP functions, meaning I can control music playback with the headset's music controls) and watch divx videos thru the VGA screen. Only thing left untested is the GPS software which i can only do it when I got my next vehicle...

SMSchat

Think i'm a bit slow in discovering this cool app, maybe i had never taken threaded sms app seriously in the past.....until now.

I was browsing thru the symbian sites until i saw a review on this app named SMSChat by Symbianware. Ok, i missed this site for quite a while but hey it's never too late right?

For the clueless, threaded sms is about displaying your sms communication messages with different individuals in threads, much like a instant messenging fashion. This enables you to see the history of your sms communications in very easy and nice way.

The app is not without its flaws. Loading of the communication window is a tad slower in displaying than the built in module but if you can live with that, it's a great app. Anyway it's not really that slow. Good thing about this software is that it actually uses the phone's built in sms modules so whatever sms you sent or received will still reside in the built in messenging apps.

For those who are into eye candy, you won't be disappointed as it supports themes as well :)

Farewell...

You had served me well for the last 7 years, brought me places across 3 countries which won't be possible without you. You had also brought me and my dear on trips which we enjoyed very much. Not once you throw your temper when we are far away from our home ground and brought us safely back home.

And it seems that circumstances dictate that we have to part at such premature term. Goodbye my Silver Bullet, you will be remembered....

Happy Birthday cum Wedding Anniversary....

To DaBitch and AngKuGuay whom had celebrated the evening part of the event where their friends have the honor to celebrate DaBitch's birthday. Of course we are only celebrating Bitch's birthday part, the anniversary part is between themselves :)

Ah Lim had specially cooked some dishes for everyone to savour his simple but excellent cooking.

How can the dinner ended without a good nice cake? The gang bought her the tiramisu cake which simply looked and tasted heavenly.

As usual, after filling up the stomach, we sat down and talked about life and of course crap lol.

Tough Luck....

What a day.

Got a call from MINDEF informing me that I was mobilized for the Open Mobilization Exercise, disrupting my plan of going outdoors activity today with Dear and couple of my friends. No choice, call of duty, have to go back to get my stuff in order to report to camp...

However, I did not managed to make it home.

On the way back to home, I was travelling along the highway, leaving a car length from the vehicle behind. Traffic was moderate and congestion will be the last thing to see in this situation. Suddenly out of the blue, the vehicle in front of me e-braked in a blink of an eye and I follow suit.

As much and hard as I tried to hold the brakes, the vehicle is getting nearer and nearer with the feeling that my tires are losing its grip. Knowing that there's no way to stop the bike in time, my body instinctively reacted to the situation: throw myself out of the bike.

I landed hard on the floor, made a few rolls and next thing I know is to get up and rush for the divider (yes, I was on the overtaking lane). I was in pain, but thanks to the adrenaline rush, I was able to compose myself and stood up to see what was going on. The cabbie from the taxi behind came out of the car and immediately call the ambulance to bring me to hospital. He commented that if he had braked a little later, I would be under his car. That will be a real chilling thought....*shiver* Shortly after, the ambulance came and brought me to the hospital. The doctor was worried that I might have hurt my spinal cord so I was admitted into the observation ward for a day. Luckily, other than abrasions on my arm and limb, I was left with a strained neck. Miraculously, my hands and the gloves my Dear gave me were left unhurt. Must be Dear's blessing at work :)

Guess I am blessed and lucky to able to survive this ordeal with little scratches.

For the bike, its fate is less than positive. the front of the bike is more or less wrecked, with one of the side panniers being torn out from the bike. It is pretty sad sight. Due to the resale value of this bike, it is not worth the money to repair the damages, so I guess this will be the last time I ever rode this bike and declare it officially retired. It has served me a good 7 years of riding thru Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand roads. Goodbye , Silver Bullet, you will be missed.

I will also like to thank those who came to see me at the hosipital, particularly Weiming & Scully (and their cute daughter), AngKuGuay & DaBitch, Fox, Ah Lim, Damien & Sarah and of course the rest who had visited me as well. Really appreciate their concerns. Oh, and most importantly, thanks to Dear for her constant caring at the hospital (muackz).

Some of the scene photos I took before I was hurdled off by the ambulance....

Poor bike.....

Only this scratch on the helmet... Miracle....

That's me lying with the neck brace....
