George Carlin Dead at 71

Robert Sebree / AP file

One of my favorite comedian, passed away at the age of 71 of heart failure. His edgy, provocative humor had entertained since the day I knew about him. He was also featured in Dogma, a movie which centered around Jay and Silent Bob characters where I were very amused by the Buddy Christ presented in it.

Rest in Peace George, you'll be missed.

Communiasia 2008

This year, I registered for the technological exhibition as a trade visitor (anyway, this exhibition is only for trade visitors duhz). Managed to get to see some of the latest technologies (eg Wimax, DVB, etc), electronics products, networking products and of course, my favorite section, mobile phone!

So took a half day leave and travelled all the way to Expo to catch this event. The place is packed with businessmen, engineers and people of other professions to check out the technology and products.

Well, I do walked around the Wireless Section, Satcomms Section, etc... but I stayed the longest is at the mobile phone technology section, and that's about the only place where I took some photos (although not very clear)
First I stopped by the Samsung booth, where they had set up a big booth I must say, considering the amount of electronics gadgets they are showing. Here's some of the photos taken:

Sammy's own UMPC, which is a touchscreen with a foldable keyboard. Size is about 1/3 smaller than  the Asus eeePC 900. This is shown with the keyboard open......

And touch sensitive media player controls are visible when the keyboard is closed. Too bad, you won't get to see this selling in Singapore though.

The Sammy's own Touch Wizard UI as shown. Yes, you can drag those widgets anywhere on the screen.

Highlight of their booth: the upcoming Omnia PPC phone (i900). There you see the Omnia phones are exhibited on  the Microsoft's Surface platform. Wonder what is Microsoft Surface? Check this out. In a nutshell, Microsoft Surface will introduce the features and specifications of the phone when you place the phone on the platform.

Omnia in my hand. It's a PPC running WM6.1 Professional, carrying a 5MP auto focus camera with WQVGA 262k TFT screen, built in GPS with geotagging capability, built in accelerometer sensor and a mini mousepad (mousepad? yes you got that right)

After Samsung, I moved on to one of my favorite booth...NTT  DoCoMo! Why the fascination you might ask...cos the Japanese makes the coolest and most high-tech mobile phones known to man.

Demotrator showing off the capability of LTE technology. Demostration showed that use can transfer a 9.5MB file from server to client in 1 sec while the bandwidth is being used to stream 8 HD videos to the 2 TVs shown in the photo. They claimed a bandwidth of 255Mbps!

Took a picture of the DoCoMo's Sony Ericsson clamshell using the Sony Bravia LCD technology. Why don't SE bring this kind of phone to our market as well?

The DoCoMo booth also demostrated how the phones can be used to send interactive emails, playing 3D games with stunning graphics and the best feature (in my opinion of course) the phone wallet, which you can use your phone to take trains, buy stuffs and even lock/unlock your house door!

After the 2 booths, we moved on to the rest of the areas which we did not take any pictures. Nevertheless, it is an eye opener for first-timer like me to see all the different professional equipments used for the latest technological implementations. Will certainly come back again next year.

Firefox 3 is officially released!

Yes, after using it since Beta4 on my Ubuntu PC @ home & Windows PC @ work. it is finally released as official version for the masses, falling slightly behind Opera 9.5's release.

Both browsers are extremely fast in web page rendering and Firefox 2's memory footprint issue had been minimised. One of the new features it had over the previous version is the Identity Information of the web pages you are browsing, telling you if the site is safe or a malicious one. Of course, it's not working on many sites though.

Of course, there are more improvements which I will prefer you to go find out at their official site and download it if you want a different experience from using the Internet Explorer (one browser that I had avoided like a disease for many years)

Enjoy!

Death

How nice if everyone could face death so bravely like the way Dr Randy Pausch did...

A friend sent me this video on Facebook and I watched the entire clip which is aired on the Oprah Show. What he said in the talk is so inspiring. One of my favorite expressions in the talk is, "Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want"... ya, but how many people actually think that way in our society?

Here's the short version where he presented the talk at the Oprah Show.

And here's the long version:

And right now, I'm converting this video so I can watch it on my phone, anywhere, anytime.
